One won

Today's post is really about two words.  I'm looking at one and won because I've seen them interchanged three times in the last few days.  All three times were in sentences similar to this, which I use because the last couple of weeks have been all about the Olympics:
"The right team one, although it was a very close game."
Our English language is so strange that I'm surprised anybody can learn it.  We take in bits and pieces from many other languages, thus compounding the spelling confusion.  So we have two little words to ponder today.

......... one ......... won .........

Looking at them — same size, same number of letters  how would anyone guess they are pronounced the same?
One and one makes two.
Won and won makes a winner.
One and won makes a sentence.
